To our community,
As we wrap up Term 1, it’s a great time to reflect on the progress, achievements, and experiences that have shaped our strong start to the year. This term has been filled with valuable learning, opportunities for connection, and moments of celebration.
A key focus continues to be the importance of consistent attendance and effective study habits. Being present in class and making the most of learning time sets students up for success—not just academically, but in developing strong routines and a sense of responsibility. Our Study Lines and tutorials have been well-utilised, providing students with dedicated time to seek support, extend their learning, and stay on track. It has been fantastic to see tutorial spaces and the library buzzing with students engaging in independent and supported study.
As part of our commitment to keeping students and families informed about learning progress, Interim Reports have now been distributed. These reports provide a snapshot of each student’s engagement, effort, and progress across their subjects. We encourage you to take the time to reflect on these reports, identify what is going well, and areas for improvement. As partners in your young adult’s learning journey, we are here to provide support, guidance, and strategies to help them stay on track and achieve their learning goals.
In conjunction with these reports, attendance reports are also being provided throughout the term to support a high level of attendance. Our data indicate that students who maintain an attendance rate of 86% or above are more likely to achieve a Commendable Achievement or above in their subjects. Regular attendance is a key factor in academic success, and we encourage families to prioritise this wherever possible.
Looking ahead, Term 2 will bring another important checkpoint, with progress reports distributed in Week 3, Friday 16th May. These will be followed by our Learning Conversations Evening on Wednesday, 28th May, providing an opportunity for students, parents, and teachers to discuss learning progress so far and set goals for continued success. In addition, students and families will also receive a Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) Progress Report, indicating whether they are "On Track" to meet key expectations for TCE attainment.
This term has also been a time to celebrate our vibrant and diverse community. Harmony Day was a standout, bringing people together to acknowledge and appreciate the different cultures and backgrounds that make our college such a welcoming place. Another highlight was our Achievers Evening, where we recognised the exceptional efforts of students from 2024—an inspiring reminder of what dedication and perseverance can lead to.
Staff from our Transition Team have begun visiting our teggana Collective Schools as part of our ongoing collaboration to strengthen connections and ensure smooth transitions for students moving beyond Year 10. Not only have we started extending our reach, but there have also been opportunities for our collective schools to connect with us. One such recent opportunity was the Taniwha Art Event, held in the Rosny College Auditorium. This event celebrated the creative talents of people within our broader community and provided a fantastic platform for artistic expression and community connection. It also demonstrated the strong collaborative spirit between our schools and the shared commitment to supporting students in a variety of ways. We look forward to further opportunities that bring our communities together and support the continued development of our students.
Get Connected for Next Year
If you have family members or know of anyone who is currently not connected to Rosny College but may be interested in joining our community next year, we encourage them to connect with us through our social media channels, including Instagram and Facebook. These platforms provide valuable updates and insights into college life and the opportunities available to students. Additionally, our website is an excellent resource for information about our programs, events, and enrolment processes.
As a public school, Rosny College regularly welcomes many students from the private sector, particularly in Year 11. If you know of any students who are currently in Year 10 and considering Rosny College for Year 11, we encourage them to reach out to us directly. We having commenced taking Expressions of Interest for 2026. We will add these students to our mailing list, ensuring they stay up to date with important information about enrolment, programs, and upcoming events - including our Information Evening on Tuesday, May 13. All Rosny College teachers will be available on the night to answer questions, and guided tours of the college will be offered. Our goal is to support families as they explore the best options for their child’s future, and we look forward to helping make that transition as smooth as possible.
We hope you enjoy this snapshot of Term 1 contained within the newsletter. Wishing everyone a well-earned break and a positive start to Term 2!
Andrew Woodham
Principal, Rosny College
This term Rosny College gathered to celebrate the exceptional accomplishments of our 2024 students and to honour their dedication to learning and growth.
Our Achievers Evening was a great success highlighting the achievements of students across all levels of subjects. Each achievement—whether academic, vocational, or personal—marks a step toward shaping a bright future. At Rosny College, success is not measured solely by academic grades, but by the meaningful steps our students take toward their goals and aspirations. Whether through the attainment of the TCE or TCEA, excelling in pre-tertiary studies, completing vocational education and training, or engaging in work-based learning experiences, every pathway reflects the unique aspirations and capabilities of our students. Our Achievers Evening is a testament to the diversity of achievement and highlights the breadth of opportunities available here at Rosny College.
A special congratulations goes to our major Award winners and especially our DUX of the School 2024 Monique S who gave a fantastic address about her experiences at Rosny over 2023-2024.

A Fantastic Start to the Year!
What an incredible term it’s been! We kicked things off with a welcome BBQ on day one, where we all enjoyed food, games and great entertainment on the terrace.
In Week 3, we held the annual Enrichment Expo with 200 students signing up for activities including life drawing, badminton, geology camp, groove orchestra, and even a scuba diving course and so much more. These enrichments give students the perfect opportunity to "Find their Tribe," explore new interests, and build lasting friendships.
Week 5 marked our celebration of International Women’s Day. Students painted patches dedicated to important women in their lives, which will be combined into a colourful quilt to show our appreciation and admiration for the women who inspire and care for us.
In Week 6, the common room was glowing in orange to celebrate our cultural diversity in Harmony Week. We decorated bunting with messages about what harmony means to us, Sesandi entertained us with a Sri Lankan pop song, and learned to write our names in Japanese script with the help of international students Sotte and Nao. Cathy led a creative session making cord from recycled fabric, while others enjoyed painting their nails and sampling delicious food from India, China, and Vietnam.
Stay updated with what’s in store for next term by checking the TV screens in the common room and café or following us on Instagram and Facebook.

English Studio 2 students have spent term one looking at the module “Writing for Young Audiences”. They started by thinking about themselves as writers and created a collage to reflect on what they enjoy writing, their ideal writing space, how frequently they write and other writing practices. From here, they completed two small pieces of writing – a “Dribble” (50 words) which they then expanded to a “Trabble” (300 words).
Here is an example of a Dribble from Ruby:
The rain fell down hard, drenching her umbrella as she stood still in the alleyway. The neon lights above her head flickered and buzzed, casting red-blue colours over her face. She stared at the glow, lost in thought. Waiting for any sign that life might change, even for a moment.
The next step was to promote their work by writing a blurb for their Trabble and incorporating this as part of a complete back book cover.
The course focuses on “reading like a writer” so that students become familiar with the structures and conventions of different texts. One text type that students had fun with was analysing the children’s book Hairy Mclary of Donaldson’s Dairy and then writing and illustrating a few pages of their own children’s story. These ranged from concept books, such as the Animal Alphabet to a book about birds, to Simon the Sardine in conflict with Fred the Flying Fish! As the term concludes, students will be crafting extended creative responses in a variety of forms and genres.

SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICSHIPS AVAILABLE
Exciting Opportunities Through School-Based Apprenticeships.
An Australian School-Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) is a fantastic way for students to gain paid employment, hands on training, and work towards their TCE, all while completing their studies at Rosny College. Typically, students in an ASBA work two days a week with their employer and attend college for the remaining three days.
One of our students, Connor Jensen recently secured an ASBA with Midland Tractors. This opportunity is providing Connor with invaluable industry experience, a qualification in Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology and a strong foundation for his future career in the automotive field.
If you’re interested in learning more about Australian School-Based Apprenticeships, or if you’re an employer looking to support a student through this program, please contact Belinda Vallerine at rosny.college.beyond@decyp.tas.gov.au.
Ten Days on the Island - Dreamgirls Taniwha
Visual Art students recently visited the Bellerive Boardwalk to witness the installation of Taniwha Time Machine, an artwork by the Dreamgirls Art Collective as part of 10 Days on the Island. For the students, the experience offered a valuable opportunity to engage with public art and understand how large-scale installations are installed.
In conjunction with 10 Days on the Island, Rosny College invited the Dreamgirl Collective to share their experience practice and cultural contexts for their Taniwha Time Machine Art installation. Students from both Rosny and Clarence High Schools participated and had the opportunity to witness professional practising artists chat informally and then ask questions to support their learning tasks. It was a really exciting opportunity and a big thanks goes out to Evelyn Murray for her amazing organisation and support of the project.

ROSNY VET COOKERY AND HOSPITALITY
The 2024 Achievers event was held in March this year and students from the VET Cookery class prepared canape items for 250 people while students from the VET Hospitality class served the food and served a range of drinks.
The event went smoothly with very little left over at the end. Students were able to develop skills of filleting Ocean Trout, making beetroot cured gravadlax and preparing canape items suitable for serving a large group of people in a short period of time. It was a great success and hands on learning experience.

The Cert II Tourism students have just returned from a three-day excursion to the West Coast of Tasmania.
They visited many attractions along the way and spoke to local operators to gain a better understanding of the unique offerings on Tasmania’s West Coast. Our first day included Tarraleah Falls, a Lake St Clair Visitor Centre familiarisation where we spoke to a Visitor Centre staff and Ranger, the West Coast Visitor Centre in Strahan and ending the day by watching the long running show ‘The Ship That Never Was’. Day 2 was a trip with the World Heritage Cruise ship including stops at Sarah Island penal settlement- we got perfect sailing weather - then later a visit to the Henty Dunes, and finally a sunset visit to the 35km long Ocean Beach (where we met journalist and photographer filming for a Tourism Tasmania shoot!).
Our last day started with a familiarisation on the West Coast Wilderness Railway, then stops at Queenstown, Iron Blow Lookout, Russell Falls and a visit to the artistic wooden attraction ‘The Wall’. We also managed a quick hike into the Franklin River to walk over the swing bridge.
The students had a great time and also completed multiple assessments during the trip including providing scripted commentaries for allocated attractions. The students are looking forward to advocating for West Coast tourism with their friends, family and in their future careers.

This term the Rosny College Expedition classes have experienced 2 fantastic camps.
From the 21 to the 23 March students had the opportunity to travel to Freycinet to learn about rock climbing and abseiling. The group had an amazing time at White Water Wall campground and explored the cliff areas of Lassies Wall and Harlequin Buttress as well as enjoying a swim in the rock pools of Bluestone Bay. We were treated to clear, sunny skies from Friday until Sunday with some light drizzle for the drive home. This group formed strong connections during the camp learning new skills and techniques in a cliff environment. Many of the group had completed two camps in two weeks making for very impressive camp cooking skills and camp craft on display! Some of the classic routes climbed at Lassies Wall included Crack Climb, Rose Ramble, Artemis, Road to Ruin and Ballyhoo, the group loved the challenge of rock climbing and comradery and support of working out the moves and reaching a new high point for each route. We look forward to sharing more camp adventures in the coming months!
On Friday 14 March, the Rosny College Expedition classes travelled to Fortescue Bay for their first camp. The group walked into Canoe Bay in beautiful weather to snorkel and explore the William Pit Wreck and shoreline. The warm temps and a love for the water meant the group were in no hurry to get out! We saw Draughtboard and Port Jackson sharks, large Marblefish and many other small fish species living in Canoe Bay. On Friday evening we pitched tents in the Fortescue Bay campground and prepared dinner whilst enjoying the calm sunset weather. There were some stand out camp chefs who prepared meals such as pesto pasta, nachos, and noodles but the highlight was Marina’s guacamole! After a good night’s sleep the group walked out to Cape Hauy, some found this to be quite a challenge in the 25-degree weather, the swim at the beach after finishing the walk made the tired legs feel fresh again in no time. The Expedition group are now re-packing and preparing for Rock Climbing Camp this weekend at Freycinet.

UNPRECEDENTED PRESENTED BY THEATRE PERFORMANCE
The first Rosny College production of the year was on in week (10, 9, 10 and 11th of April).
Unprecedented written by Campion Decent and performed for the 2025 Theatre Performance class is a gripping verbatim account of the Black Summer fires – the smoke that choked our nation, the isolated communities left to fend for themselves, the heroism and the deep tragedy of the coronial inquests. The play asks urgent questions about survival in the face of political stagnancy and a growing climate emergency.
Congratulations to everyone involved in this moving production.
