We honour and acknowledge the moomaremener people of the Oyster Bay Nation. They are the original custodians of this land where we learn and live.
We pay respect to them, and the Elders past and present. We recognise the continuing connection of Palawa to Country and community.
We acknowledge the wrongs and injustices of the past and commit to honouring and celebrating Aboriginal histories and cultures in our learning every day.
This land is now the responsibility of us all. By continuing to care for Country and each other we uphold the timeless values of the moomaremener and the Palawa.
Dear Rosny College Community,
As we embark on this new year, it is with great pleasure that we extend a warm welcome to all new members of our learning community. Whether you are a student, parent, guardian, teacher, or staff member, we are thrilled to have you join our learning community.
Our team has been working tirelessly to ensure we start the year well prepared and set up to offer a wide array of exciting and engaging educational experiences that will challenge, inspire, and empower our learners.
Central to our work is our commitment to our learners. Last year, as a staff we strengthen our moral imperative developing “some key belief and commitment statements” about our role as educators, which has affirmed our dedication to nurturing, not just academic growth but also the holistic development of every individual within our community. These belief statements connect to and underpin our departmental "why" and "how" statements, providing guidance to our actions and decisions.
We harnessed the voice of our community members, to develop and shape our values, and the statements that now sit under them. Each statement represents the essence of how we “live” these every day and it is work we are committed to progressing this year.
Central to this, is the creation of an environment where every student feels supported and valued. We understand that when students are emotionally and mentally well, they can fully focus on their learning journey. That's why fostering a culture of wellbeing is one of our key focus areas. We are committed to promoting the wellbeing of our students by providing them with the necessary support systems and resources to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our values serve as the foundation upon which we continue to build and nurture an inclusive and positive college culture where every student is known, safe, well and learning. These values guide us in our interactions with one another and shape the way we approach teaching, learning, and personal development.
Our values and their underpinning statements can be summarised as:
CONNECTION: We seek and provide support. We foster meaningful relationships to ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging, ensuring that every voice is heard, and creating an environment where everyone is known, safe, and supported.
COURAGE: We encourage our learners to step out of their comfort zones, take positive risks, and embrace new challenges with courage and determination.
GROWTH: We believe in the potential for growth and development in every individual. Through continuous learning and self-reflection, we strive to unlock and nurture this potential in ourselves and our students.
RESPECT: Respect for oneself and others is fundamental to our community. We celebrate diversity and foster an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard.
RESPONSIBILITY: We take responsibility for our actions and their impact on others and the environment. We empower our students to become responsible global citizens to contribute positively to society.
At Rosny we want to ensure that our values are “lived” and are not merely “words on a wall”. This term, we will be focusing on the value of CONNECTION, to ensure that students develop a strong sense of belonging early on. Our staff will foster and promote these values across our college through their practice. One example of this is ensuring they are providing opportunities for collaboration and encouraging students to build connections with their peers and teachers. These values are also woven into our collaborative efforts within our Professional Learning teams to ensure our staff are delivering high quality engaging practice to our learners.
This focus on connection also extends to our families with our staff reaching out to you over the next few weeks, aiming to partner with you in your young adults’ learning journey.
This year our staff also recognise the responsibility to teach the essential reading skills that empower students to understand texts effectively within their courses. With courage, our staff will embrace the continued teaching of reading, to ensure that every student can engage in the text type within their chosen courses and better experience success.
COMMUNICATION AT ROSNY COLLEGE
There are several ways in which the College will communicate important information to our learners and their families/carers. One of the main ways we communicate messages to our learners is through Home Group. This occurs every Wednesday 12-12.45pm. Attendance at support group is crucial. The student news bulletin is conveyed during this time and Home Group also provides a space for students to seek clarification of any information, as well as acting as a check-in space with their home group teacher regarding course work, college culture and wellbeing. The student bulletin is also uploaded to the Colleges CANVAS page under the bulletin tab.
Over the next few weeks, our parents/carers are likely to receive communication from Home Group Teachers to introduce themselves. We also have our social media accounts, on Facebook and Instagram where you can access updates about upcoming events and celebrations. At present we are not able to respond to messages in our social media spaces so please direct any questions to our office, or teachers.
Most of our communication is delivered to you via email, so it is important that we have an up to date email address. During Term 1 we will also implement a system where you give consent to excursions and other activities as well as pay invoices via links sent to you by email. We also use email to regularly communicate with students and have stressed the importance of them reading their education emails regularly.
You will receive emails from our main college address which is rosny.college@decyp.tas.gov.au and from individual staff members. Individual staff members email addresses always end in @decyp.tas.gov.au.
There will be newsletters sent out each term, as well as additional communications that pertain to specific information as required.
As we look ahead to the rest of the year, we look forward to continuing to create an enriching and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive and reach their full potential. Together, we will make this year a memorable and transformative one for our entire Rosny College community.
Warm regards,
Andrew Woodham

College life can be an exciting time full of learning experiences, opportunities to form new relationships, and the beginnings of adulthood. But it can also be a source of stress and pressure for students as they navigate new responsibilities. With increased academic demands and the possibility of enrolling in certificate II/III courses, students are also faced with adult concerns such as obtaining their driver's license, finding employment, making decisions about their future, adjusting to new housing and social situations, and forming new relationships.
It's important to recognise that these are complex and demanding considerations for young people at this stage of their lives. By understanding the challenges that college students face, we can work to support them and help them thrive in their academic and personal lives. Central to our thinking, is that students who have strong resilience, positive friend and adult networks, and personal skills of self-regulation are significantly more prepared to manage life and academic pressures. In-turn, those students achieve greater outcomes in all regards.
At Rosny we are guided by the Department for Education Children and Young People’s, ‘Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy’. Central to this strategy are the establishment and understanding of the six domains of wellbeing, they are:
- Being loved and Safe
- Being healthy
- Participating
- Having material basics
- Learning, and
- Having a positive sense of culture and identity.
At Rosny College, we are committed to promoting a strong and healthy community for all students, parents, and staff. To achieve this goal, we are exploring new ways to increase understanding of the various domains that impact our lives. We are addressing these domains and providing students with a wealth of opportunities to engage in diverse learning experiences, enrichment programs, and cultural activities. These exciting options will help foster personal and academic growth and create a vibrant and supportive environment for all members of our community to connect with each other and feel like they belong.
PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT & OUR STUDENT WELLBEING NETWORK
We are proud to offer a comprehensive network of mental health professionals to support our students' wellbeing and resilience. Our team consists of psychologists, social workers, health nurses, an Aboriginal Education Worker, and a youth worker who are available to provide a wide range of support services. These services include mental health support, psychoeducation, assessments, health advice, mindfulness practices, nutritional support, and cultural inclusion programs, among others.
For your convenience, there are several ways to access these services. You can complete a self-referral form on our Canvas page or at the iPads located near the student support services area next to the café and in the Wellbeing HUB. You can also reach out to your Home Group teacher or Wellbeing AST for assistance in making a referral. Your Home Group teacher is your central point of contact within this network of support, and they are dedicated to following your journey at Rosny College and ensuring that your needs are met.
Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment where students can thrive academically and personally. If you are in need to support, please, don’t hesitate to reach out.
In addition to our professional services in social work and psychology, we have established "The Wellbeing Hub" - a dedicated space for students to take care of their physical and emotional wellbeing. The Hub is a primary way we respond to the six wellbeing domains, and it is at The Hub that you can find support in all these areas. Located in rooms 406 and 405 at the top of the main foyer staircase, The Hub is a drop-in space where students can unwind, engage with their peers, and participate in a variety of programs aimed at promoting mental and emotional wellbeing. Our health nurses Kylie and Katherine, and Aboriginal Education Worker Cathy, manage The Hub and offers a range of resources and activities, including workshops on mindfulness, yoga, sexual health education, and cultural immersion programs.
We look forward to sharing further information about our wellbeing initiatives in coming weeks through the Home Group bulletin, for now, take the first steps to join our community, introduce yourself to our Student Support Services staff, get to know your Home Group Teacher, and visit The Hub. Having strong wellbeing and success in learning begins with being connected to a network of people who are invested in your learning, safety, health, and culture.
Please take a moment to view the student wellbeing network.
SUGGESTED ATTENDANCE
We want to ensure that we are supporting our learners in their attendance at school. Many of you may have already seen some messaging regarding this on the TV. “Attendance Matters” and here at Rosny College “Every Minute Matters”. Attendance at College is calculated by every class they attend. For each class missed, unless otherwise notified, a notification by text is sent to learner and family contact.
It will not surprise you that research has found, higher levels of attendance correlate with higher level of achievement. Attending gives you the opportunity to achieve more. We have revised our attendance processes so that we can engage with and support our learners and families when there is a potential attendance concern. We ask that if there is a concern, that you also take the initiative to discuss this with your leaner’s Home Group teacher.
The Education Act specifies the reason a young person can be authorised not to attend school. They are:
- sickness/incapacity.
- medical, legal or related appointments.
- natural disaster or extreme weather preventing your child from safely attending their enrolled school.
- terminal illness of an immediate family member.
- bereavement of a person your child had a close, significant or family relationship with.
- having witnessed or been subjected to family violence.
- being a participant or official at a recognised State, National or International event.
- participation in a recognised learning experience.
- an application for home education being received by the Education Registrar and provisional registration being granted.
What will happen if my young person is absent for a reason that isn’t listed?
- The absence will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.
- Notifications are sent when classes are missed.
- Principals receive notifications about the number of unauthorised absences.
- The College may send you a letter notifying you of the number of unauthorised absences.
- They will seek to work with you to increase your child’s attendance to maximise their learning if the principal is concerned about your child’s attendance.
As young responsible adults we expect all learners to be punctual to their classes. There are no bells at the College. We understand that this can be challenging for some learners, but we will seek to support them with punctuality in instances where there is an ongoing concern, we hope to have our families support on this matter too.
ROSNY COLLEGE TIMETABLE
For learners the school day starts at 8.30am and runs until 2.30pm each day except Wednesday when classes conclude at 3pm. Please see the College timetable below.
Most students at the College have a ‘study line’ if they are on a full-time student load. Student have been encouraged to be responsible with regards to what they choose to do in this time. We want our leaners to succeed here at Rosny College and using this time to engage with supports, study, tutorial sessions, enrichments and leadership opportunities is a good use of this time. Using this time wisely and forming good habits early will ensure that students make the most of their time here and set themselves up for success.
NEW ENRICHMENT COURSES
Enrichment provides students with an opportunity to follow their passion, learn something new and meet new friends through engaging in tutorials, short courses, and other special interest activities. Enrichment can also provide our learners with the important balance they may need for their wellbeing. We believe our enrichment opportunities will strengthen us as a college community by providing more time for our community members to connect through shared areas of interest.
Our enrichment expo will be held in week 3 for students to enrol in a wide range of offerings. Here is a snapshot of programs being offered:
Writers club, karate, badminton, Mt Hotham Ski trip, water polo, vinyl sticker making, life drawing, art club, experimental music club, Minecraft, costume design, groove orchestra, meditation, sound bath, book club, vocal ensemble, enviro group, chess club, Rosny mob and many more.
We hope each student takes up at least one of these opportunities. We are certainly looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Leads our Teaching and Learning Attainment
Firstly, and most importantly I’d like to invite all parents and carers to attend our ‘Meet the Teacher Evening’ on Tuesday 27th February at 5:30pm. This is a fantastic opportunity to talk briefly to your child’s teachers and create the important connection between teacher and parent/carer. We look forward to seeing you all there!
This year teachers have a specific focus on explicitly teaching every student the literacy needs for each course. Already teachers have identified the reading comprehension of their courses and are working with our Quality Teaching Coach to enhance our ability to assist students with the skills needed.
Knowing our students and their learning needs is an important part of our work as teachers. In mid-March we will be communicating with parents of students with Learning Plans to approve or amend how we differentiate for your young person’s needs. We will also be writing to all parents with students studying level 3 and 4 courses (pre-tertiary courses) about the Reasonable Adjustment processes for students with exams and/or folios.
At Rosny College we strive to meet the learning needs of all students. I look forward, in future editions of our newsletter, to introduce key members of our team, as well as programs that are in place for our full range of students, including our Career Counsellor, High Achievers Coordinator and our Attainment and Short Course Coordinator.
I look forward to meeting you all on Tuesday 27th February at our Meet the Teacher Evening!

Leads Transition, Course Counselling and Retention
Hello everyone,
I am excited to join the team at Rosny College. I am a Secondary trained teacher who spent ten years working in High School and many years at Montagu Bay Primary. As my children grew older, my interest in high school teaching was reignited. Through their college experiences, I developed a deep connection with this age group. Working at Claremont College last year, I witnessed the untapped potential of emerging adults, fuelling my passion for teaching, leading, and counselling young people on the cusp of adulthood. My experiences last year, and so far at Rosny, have crystallised my ambition to further immerse myself in supporting and guiding this unique age group.
As Assistant Principal for Transition and Retention, my key areas of responsibility include:
- Oversight of the Transition Team and course change process.
- Being a member of the teggana Collective.
- Transition Events such as Jump Start, Enrolment Evenings, Parent/Carer Information Evenings and teggana High School visits.
- Youth Participation Database.
- Enrolments – preliminary, confirmed, shared and part-time.
- Careers and Pathways.
I am a passionate leader with a genuine urge to effect change, to be a part of a vibrant educational community, and to further my journey of personal and professional growth. I am convinced that together, we can foster an environment where students excel, educators feel valued, and every decision is grounded in both evidence and empathy. I look forward to the challenges and rewards which lie ahead.
