WELCOME FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Andrew_Woodham.jpg

Dear Rosny College Community,

As we embark on this new year, it is with great pleasure that we extend a warm welcome to all new members of our learning community. Whether you are a student, parent, guardian, teacher, or staff member, we are thrilled to have you join our learning community.

Our team has been working tirelessly to ensure we start the year well prepared and set up to offer a wide array of exciting and engaging educational experiences that will challenge, inspire, and empower our learners.

Central to our work is our commitment to our learners. Last year, as a staff we strengthen our moral imperative developing “some key belief and commitment statements” about our role as educators, which has affirmed our dedication to nurturing, not just academic growth but also the holistic development of every individual within our community. These belief statements connect to and underpin our departmental "why" and "how" statements, providing guidance to our actions and decisions.

We harnessed the voice of our community members, to develop and shape our values, and the statements that now sit under them. Each statement represents the essence of how we “live” these every day and it is work we are committed to progressing this year.

Central to this, is the creation of an environment where every student feels supported and valued. We understand that when students are emotionally and mentally well, they can fully focus on their learning journey. That's why fostering a culture of wellbeing is one of our key focus areas. We are committed to promoting the wellbeing of our students by providing them with the necessary support systems and resources to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our values serve as the foundation upon which we continue to build and nurture an inclusive and positive college culture where every student is known, safe, well and learning. These values guide us in our interactions with one another and shape the way we approach teaching, learning, and personal development.

Our values and their underpinning statements can be summarised as:

CONNECTION: We seek and provide support. We foster meaningful relationships to ensure everyone feels a sense of belonging, ensuring that every voice is heard, and creating an environment where everyone is known, safe, and supported.

COURAGE: We encourage our learners to step out of their comfort zones, take positive risks, and embrace new challenges with courage and determination.

GROWTH: We believe in the potential for growth and development in every individual. Through continuous learning and self-reflection, we strive to unlock and nurture this potential in ourselves and our students.

RESPECT: Respect for oneself and others is fundamental to our community. We celebrate diversity and foster an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and heard.

RESPONSIBILITY: We take responsibility for our actions and their impact on others and the environment. We empower our students to become responsible global citizens to contribute positively to society.

At Rosny we want to ensure that our values are “lived” and are not merely “words on a wall”. This term, we will be focusing on the value of CONNECTION, to ensure that students develop a strong sense of belonging early on. Our staff will foster and promote these values across our college through their practice. One example of this is ensuring they are providing opportunities for collaboration and encouraging students to build connections with their peers and teachers. These values are also woven into our collaborative efforts within our Professional Learning teams to ensure our staff are delivering high quality engaging practice to our learners.

This focus on connection also extends to our families with our staff reaching out to you over the next few weeks, aiming to partner with you in your young adults’ learning journey.

This year our staff also recognise the responsibility to teach the essential reading skills that empower students to understand texts effectively within their courses. With courage, our staff will embrace the continued teaching of reading, to ensure that every student can engage in the text type within their chosen courses and better experience success.

COMMUNICATION AT ROSNY COLLEGE

There are several ways in which the College will communicate important information to our learners and their families/carers. One of the main ways we communicate messages to our learners is through Home Group. This occurs every Wednesday 12-12.45pm. Attendance at support group is crucial. The student news bulletin is conveyed during this time and Home Group also provides a space for students to seek clarification of any information, as well as acting as a check-in space with their home group teacher regarding course work, college culture and wellbeing. The student bulletin is also uploaded to the Colleges CANVAS page under the bulletin tab.

Over the next few weeks, our parents/carers are likely to receive communication from Home Group Teachers to introduce themselves. We also have our social media accounts, on Facebook and Instagram where you can access updates about upcoming events and celebrations. At present we are not able to respond to messages in our social media spaces so please direct any questions to our office, or teachers.

Most of our communication is delivered to you via email, so it is important that we have an up to date email address. During Term 1 we will also implement a system where you give consent to excursions and other activities as well as pay invoices via links sent to you by email. We also use email to regularly communicate with students and have stressed the importance of them reading their education emails regularly.

You will receive emails from our main college address which is rosny.college@decyp.tas.gov.au and from individual staff members. Individual staff members email addresses always end in @decyp.tas.gov.au.

There will be newsletters sent out each term, as well as additional communications that pertain to specific information as required.

As we look ahead to the rest of the year, we look forward to continuing to create an enriching and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive and reach their full potential. Together, we will make this year a memorable and transformative one for our entire Rosny College community.

Warm regards,

Andrew Woodham
