With just four weeks of formal classes remaining, it's important to stay focused and make the most of the time we have left.
With continued attendance and effort, our learners still have the opportunity to positively impact their final outcomes. If extra support is needed, remember that the Rosny Attainment Program (RAP) begins in the first week of exams—an excellent opportunity to improve internal assessment ratings for level 2 subjects.
It’s been fantastic to see our learners succeeding both in and out of the classroom, sharing their talents with the broader community. From the media attention on our Taiko drumming students to the recent success of our Rock Challenge band, Overthought, we have much to celebrate.
A big thank you to our families and learners who completed the Student Wellbeing and Family Satisfaction Surveys—your feedback is invaluable and helps us improve.
Let’s make the most of these final weeks and finish the year strong!

FOOD SUPPORT THROUGH STUDENT SERVICES
Student services have been listening to student voice and have heard that there is a need for access to food for free at school.
When we are hungry it is much harder to stay focused, regulated and engaged, especially at school. When students are hungry, they are not able to get their work done, might feel really flat or sad, and may even avoid coming to school. For some time Student Services have been providing access to toasties and a small selection of freezer meals through the Wellbeing Hub, as well as snacks through the snack table out the front of student services. This term Rosny College has been lucky to become the latest school to partner with Clarence Salvation Army around their Grab and Go lunch packs! The Salvos have committed to providing 150 lunch packs this year, with the hopes of expanding the program next year.
Each pack contains:
- A cup noodle
- Juice box
- Fruit cup
- Muesli bar
- Popcorn or chips
- Freddo frog
These packs can be accessed through student services, the wellbeing hub, the yarning space or through talking to a trusted teacher.
Anyone can access a food pack if they are hungry! We just ask that students only take what they intend to eat.
Student services are also trying to collect some information around how the food we provide is helping students. To do this all snacks and food packs have a QR code attached that leads to an anonymous survey. By completing the survey you are helping ensure that we can continue providing this service and can contribute thoughts on how we can improve too. We ask that the survey is completed each time you access food support. If you have previously accessed a snack and have not completed the survey, we ask that you take the time to scan the QR code now and do so!
NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK AT ROSNY COLLEGE
To celebrate National Science week this year, students at Rosny College participated in a number of events. From creating a periodic table with cupcakes, to having the opportunity to listen to Dr Bob Brown and a panel of inspiring speakers who spoke about the critical role of science and taking action to protect threatened species, it was an action-packed week.
The highlight of the week was opening the Rosny College doors to our local Primary schools, so grades 4, 5 and 6 students could come and experience some hands-on science activities and work alongside Rosny science students. Students were greeted by our creative Drama students as Mad Scientists and were then directed to the Science Learning Area.
In the Physics department, students learnt about wave forms in string, acceleration due to gravity, diffraction of light and the famous and hair raising Van De Graaf generator. The Chemistry department showcased how to build batteries from lemons, the iodine clock reaction and observed the explosive Elephants toothpaste. While in the two Biology laboratories, students explored an array of hands-on activities from testing tastebuds, looking at stomata under microscopes, playing with blood-slime, sticky bubbles, and even watching live dissections of a marrow bone, fish and a rat!
All the labs were buzzing with curious minds, asking question, making predictions and watching science in action. A big thank you to staff and students who were involved in the activities, especially around their busy schedules. We are looking forward to even bigger and better things in 2025!
Exciting things have been happening in the visual arts space at Rosny College this term.
YOUNG ARCHIES COMPETITION
Congratulations to Maisie, Chloe, Loren, Ava, and Minna who were selected to represent Rosny College in the annual Young Archies Portrait Competition. A special mention to Loren who received a Highly Commended Award for her portrait.
HOMELESSNESS COMPETITION
Congratulations also to Year 12 student, Logan, on winning the recent Off the Couch art competition. Off the Couch was proudly presented by Clarence City Council with the aim of raising awareness of services available for young people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. The white silhouetted figure in contrast to the coloured world around it “acts metaphor for the feelings homeless youth feel.” Well done, Logan!
YARC EXHIBITION
Congratulations to Olivia, who had a wonderful solo exhibition at Youth Arc earlier this month. Titled ‘Come into the darkness to see the light,’ this body of work explored the ‘unseen’ light that exists all around us and was inspired by Dr Lisa Gershwin’s Glow Tour.
Term 3 has seen many of our maths students test their knowledge and skills in a range of competitions.
Logan came first in Tasmania in the recent Essi Money Challenge. This is a national competition that aims to reinforce financial literacy which all Essential Maths classes participated in.
Monique, Xavier, Kobe, Roly, Kiki and Ben competed in the Australian Maths Competition. All did extremely well, with Xavier and Ben receiving Distinction awards.
Ben and Roly, along with Stefan represented Rosny College in the Urquhart Maths competition. This is the most challenging of all maths events, comprising nine problems over 3 hours. Results have yet to be released.
And, on September 22nd Roly, Ben, Stefano and Kobe represented the school at the Tasmanian Maths Relay which was held right here at Rosny College. They came fourth which is a fantastic result for Rosny.
Well done to all these Maths students!
The Rosny College Mt Hotham Ski trip made the most of the best snow cover in early Term 3. They enjoyed an amazing six days of skiing and snowboarding.
Our Performing Arts department have been busy this term with a lot of events including the Big Band Extravaganza, followed by our Dance students performing in our theatre, the musical cast performing at the TSAA state conference and of course RosnyStock.
A special shout out to all our staff that made these events possible and keep extending the incredible opportunities available in the Performing Arts area at Rosny College. Stay tuned for more Performing Arts events coming up in Term 4 including, Pride and Prejudice, The Rosny Music Concert, teggana Performing Arts Showcase, Rosny Dance Concert and much more.
What a fantastic event RosnyStock was this year! It was amazing not only seeing the musicians but the incredible staging of the VET Live Productions class. The event was also captured by our VET Screen and Media class. Thank you to staff members Adam, Tony, David and Brad. The extra mile you go to with your students to give them these experiences is inspiring.
Well done to all students who performed. Congratulations must also go to our winners and runner ups of the event who went on to represent Rosny College at the Southern Heat of the Rock Challenge at Altar recently -
Acoustic Section: Charlie and Trisha.
Bands Section: Overthought (Adam, Trisha, Xavier, Austin) and Will’s Kittens (Will, Isaac, Nayton, Charlie)
Overthought then went on to win the Bands section of the Southern Heat and proudly represented Rosny College at the Tasmanian 2024 Rock Challenge. Congratulations again Adam, Trisha, Xavier, Austin.
As has become a fun, new tradition in the last few years, Book Week was celebrated in the library by many staff and students dressing up as book characters and enjoying a yummy morning tea supplied by catering students and teachers. Many students chose a new book to take away as a prize for participating.
As part of the Human Biology 2 course and exploring future careers in medical research, students were invited to have a tour of the Menzies Research centre, in the Hobart CBD.
Dr Ella Smalley who is a Post Doctorate Research fellow and the Young Tasmanian of the Year was our guide for the morning. Dr Ella’s current work engages in the Genetics Research of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She gave us an inspiring and in-depth tour of both the clinical and molecular research areas of the centre.
Students were intrigued by the nursing simulation lab, where they met Ronald, Donald and a yet to be named dummy. These simulation dummies are worth $15,000 each and are capable of being programmed to slap, talk, sit up, shake and even expel body fluids.
The molecular research centre was another area of interest. Students were shown the labs where research is being conducted on a molecular level around the conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis, Motor Neurone and Alzheimer’s diseases, and even looking into the genetics of the Tasmanian Devil facial tumour disease. It made us nervous walking past microscopes that were worth $750,000.
We thank Dr Ella for her time and the opportunity to explore the Menzies Centre and sharing the work that the scientists are currently investigating. We look forward to seeing some of our year 12 Rosny students, who have enrolled in Nursing, on the campus in 2025!
THE ANNUAL ROSNY VOLLEYBALL COMPETITION
Throughout Term 3, the VET Sport and Recreation Class have organised and officiated the annual lunchtime Volleyball competition. This year has seen six teams go head-to-head. The VET students have developed their knowledge of sports organisation, officiating, and staffing of competitions.
The competition wrapped up this week with the student Volleyball team, Empire Spikes Back finishing as the victors. They came up against a strong staff team in the final but managed to hold on winning the game 11-9, 9-11, 12-10. Empire Spikes Back have retained the trophy for the students for the 6th year in a row. The staff team will be heading into 2025 hungry for redemption.
Well done to all teams who entered and to the positive energy and time poured into the event by the VET students.
SPORT AND REC EXCURSION – ANYTIME FITNESS
VET Sport and Recreation recently visited local business, Anytime Fitness. The students were provided a tour of the facility, a look at pathways into Personal Training and were provided with a Personal Trainer led fitness session. Students were impressed with the range of equipment available and appreciated gaining better understanding of options into the industry.
Our Springboard Kizuna Taiko Drummers were fortunate to receive a $1200 grant from the Hobart City Council to put on an event called Taiko @ TMAG!
On Thursday 19th September we travelled to the Tasmanian Museum and presented 3 Taiko Workshops for 3 Hobart primary schools. The event was a huge success, and our drummers played exceptionally well and did Rosny College proud. Our journey was covered by The Mercury, earlier in the week and on the day, we had ABC Radio come to the event and interview our students and WIN NEWS filmed us and we were on the TV news.
We would like to thank Darren and everyone in Springboard for their amazing support in making this such a positive experience. Our drummers cannot wait to play in front of a big crowd again.
MINI QUILTS SHINE IN ISLAND QUILTS 2024 STUDENT COMPETITION
Students in both Design and Production 2 (Textiles) and Workshop Techniques 1 (Textiles) designed and created mini quilts this term, which were entered into the annual Island Quilts student competition. Throughout the term, they were introduced to and developed new skills such as applique, meandering, binding, and patchwork piecing to craft their unique and stunning quilts.
We are thrilled to announce that three of our students received awards in the Senior Secondary College category. Congratulations to Anthony, who was highly commended, Charlotte, who took second prize, and Haylee, who won first prize!
This is an incredible achievement, and we are so proud of their hard work and dedication.
All students who entered the competition received a certificate along with a goodie bag filled with fabric and sewing notions to inspire their future projects. Well done to everyone for their outstanding efforts!
FOOD, COOKING AND NUTRITION UPDATE
In Food, Cooking and Nutrition we cook twice a week and complete theory tasks once a week.
Check out the photos from this term when they cooked up a chicken coconut curry with rice.
Pictured here are international exchange students Ilaria and Alice, plus Elizabeth and Ethan.
