Adventuring with Outdoor Education

Rosny College has one of the largest outdoor education departments in the Hobart region with 7 different classes in the subject area. We have been busily exploring the outdoors and learning many new skills.

At the beginning of Term 2, we finished our sea kayaking unit by paddling across the Derwent River. We had amazing weather and were accompanied by a pod of dolphins whilst exiting the harbour! We also attended surfing lessons with 420 Surf School at Clifton Beach.

At the end of Term 2, we completed mountain biking, which is one of our most exciting units of work. Students ride coastal tracks, forest trails on Mt Wellington and challenge their skills at the Meehan Mountain Bike Park and the Tolosa Mountain Bike Park on green and blue graded trails.

Adventure Recreation students began their bushcraft unit by hiking and climbing into The Lost World. This is a challenging walk with some very steep sections of trail which rewards students with an amazing view whilst standing on huge fallen basalt columns.

Students learned bush first aid techniques in theory class and were required to apply these in the bush for their assessment. Students had to treat 4 injuries that occurred whilst on a short walk and construct a makeshift stretcher to carry an injured student out of the bush.

In Term 3, Adventure Recreation has been learning about nutrition for overnight adventures and learning how to cook on Trangia hiking stoves. Students recently completed their assessment of cooking a two-course meal in a challenging environmental setting. In this case, Luckman’s Hut on Kunanyi.

Outdoor Leadership has been running their Individual Outdoor Leadership Project assessments where they need to plan and run a full outdoor education lesson. They are required to use group management strategies, facilitate effective teamworking and develop technical skills by implementing leadership theories they have learned in class.

John organised a rafting session along the Derwent River around New Norfolk.

Luka and Alex both organised complementing Mountain Bike sessions at the Meehan Range and Belbins MTB trails.

Kayal organised team building activities at The Lea Scout Centre

Holly organised Arrowgone Archery to deliver a session at Moonah where she assessed their improvement over the lesson.
